Across Chicago, the playlots of public schools have become neighborhood recreation centers for residents to enjoy. Our namesake, Frederick Ludwig Jahn, was considered the father of modern gymnastics, so play and physical education have always been part of the school’s mission. In harmony with Jahn, our vision for the playground is to become a key neighborhood resource that complies with the current playground safety standards providing all children and families of the community a safe, fun and accessible place to play. While we want a great playground for students to use, we also want this to be a shared resource with the Roscoe Village community.
We are asking neighbors to help with funding the needed improvements to the playground and landscaping of Jahn Elementary. The total budget for this enhancement is estimated at $1 million and includes a new playground, turf soccer field, refurbished basketball court, all surrounded by a track. It is the goal of the playground committee to bring the new playground to Jahn in time for the 2018/2019 school year. This is a big task but through sponsorships and neighborhood support, the Friends of Jahn playground committee feels that it can be accomplished.
In the coming months, an informational playground meetings and events will be organized and open to the broader community to learn more about the playground project plan.
